Lewiston Monument Company can help you with Granite Monuments, headstones, grave markers, columbarium, mausoleums, cremation memorials, veteran memorials, civic memorials, granite signs, benches, yard stones, statues, bronze, and monument accessories. We use a variety of techniques to create monuments including sandblasting, or sand carving, etching, shape carving, chiseling, and plaque mounting. |
Our History
Nearly a century ago, in 1918, a stone worker from St. Cloud, MN named John D. Kennedy moved to Winona, MN. At that time, four monument companies were in business in Winona.
Mr. Kennedy was temporarily employed as a stone worker in Winona when he met and married a Lewiston girl, Esther Howe Wulf. John and Esther Kennedy welcomed the birth of a son, Bernard John Kennedy in 1919 and a daughter Genevieve (Jeanne) in 1920. John Kennedy, being an energetic self-starter, soon realized the financial needs of his growing family, and decided to open his own business in Lewiston. The Lewiston Monument Company, founded in 1919, was located on North Fremont Street, near the downtown area. The company occupied that site until 1929, when it relocated to 401 East Main Street in Lewiston. The company occupied the main street plant from 1929 – 1979 and then moved to its present location at 350 Debra Drive in Lewiston. |
A Family Business Since 1919
|
John D. Kennedy served as company proprietor until his death in 1945. His son Bernard, then serving in World War II in Italy, completed his tour of duty in 1946, and returned to Lewiston to raise his family and run the monument company. A trusted worker, and shop foreman, Emil Frie, managed the company from 1945-1946, after John D. Kennedy’s death until Bernard Kennedy, Sr.’s return from active duty.
Bernard Sr. and his wife, Mary Murphy Kennedy, raised three sons and two daughters, spanning the years of the forties, fifties, and sixties. All three of the Kennedy sons entered the monument business: John M. in 1969, Bernie Joe in 1977, and Jim in 1974. Lee Kennedy, grandson of Bernard Sr., joined the firm in 2002. Bernard Kennedy, Sr. passed away in 2006 after serving as proprietor from 1946-1993. The company’s family ownership now spans four generations.
The service area of the monument company has grown from the local area, to all of Southern Minnesota, Northeast Iowa, Southwestern Wisconsin and beyond, approximately to a 200 mile radius. Delivery and installation crews are kept busy during the April to November months.
